このたび桃青京都ギャラリーでは、滋賀・信楽を拠点に制作を続ける陶芸家、上田勇児・鈴木由衣・村田彩による三人展を開催いたします。国内外で高い評価を受け、現代陶芸・コンテンポラリーアートの分野で世界的に活躍する三名が一堂に会する、非常に貴重な機会となります。
本展のメインテーマは「抹茶碗」。
上田勇児、鈴木由衣の二名は、これまで主にコンテンポラリーアートとしての陶表現を追求してきた作家であり、抹茶碗の制作は本展が初の試みとなります。一方、村田彩はこれまでも器と造形の両面から陶芸表現を深めてきた作家であり、本展では新たな抹茶碗の表現を提示します。三名すべての抹茶碗は本展のために制作された新作です。
抹茶碗という、日本文化と精神性を象徴するかたちに、信楽の土と炎、そしてそれぞれの作家の美意識がどのように立ち現れるのか。伝統的な器でありながら、完成された形式にとどまらない、現代ならではの解釈と実験性が本展の大きな見どころです。
会場には抹茶碗のほか、オブジェ、壺、皿なども並び、各作家の多様な表現を包括的にご紹介します。素材への鋭い感覚、造形への探究心、そして信楽という土地に根ざしながら世界へと開かれた視点が交差する展示空間となるでしょう。
冬から春へと季節が移ろう三月。新しいはじまりの気配のなかで生まれた、三人の作家による抹茶碗と作品群を、ぜひご高覧ください。

Tosei Kyoto Gallery is pleased to present a three-person exhibition featuring ceramic artists Yuji Ueda, Yui Suzuki, and Aya Murata, all of whom are based in Shigaraki, Shiga, where they continue their artistic practices. Widely acclaimed both in Japan and internationally, these three artists are active on the global stage in the fields of contemporary ceramics and contemporary art. This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to see their works brought together in one place.
The central theme of this exhibition is the matcha tea bowl.
Yuji Ueda and Yui Suzuki have primarily pursued ceramic expression within the context of contemporary art, and this exhibition marks their first attempt at creating matcha tea bowls. In contrast, Aya Murata has long explored ceramic expression from both functional and sculptural perspectives, and here she presents new interpretations of the matcha tea bowl. All of the matcha tea bowls by the three artists are newly created works made especially for this exhibition.
How will the clay and fire of Shigaraki, together with each artist’s aesthetic sensibility, emerge within the form of the matcha tea bowl — a shape that symbolizes Japanese culture and spirituality? Though traditionally a functional vessel, the tea bowl is not confined to a fixed or completed form. One of the highlights of this exhibition lies in the distinctly contemporary interpretations and experimental approaches brought to this iconic format.
In addition to matcha tea bowls, the exhibition will also feature objects, jars, and plates, offering a comprehensive view of each artist’s diverse modes of expression. The space will become a point of intersection where a sharp sensitivity to materials, a spirit of formal exploration, and perspectives rooted in Shigaraki yet open to the world come together.
As the seasons shift from winter to spring in March, we warmly invite you to experience the matcha tea bowls and other works by these three artists, created amid the atmosphere of new beginnings.

岐阜県多治見市を拠点に作陶する後藤秀樹は、茶陶の雄である志野の伝統を礎にしながら、その枠組みを拡張してきた陶芸家です。土に長石をかけ、炎に委ねる――「土に石をかけて焼く」という志野の原点に立ち返りつつ、自身の内面と対峙することで、造形と釉調に独自の美意識を織り込み、再構築を重ねてきました。
後藤の作品は、起伏に富んだ大胆なフォルムと、変化に満ちた志野釉の肌合いが響き合う点に大きな特徴があります。かたちが色と質感を生み、釉調が造形に動きを与える――その相互作用から立ち上がる表情は、荒々しさと静謐さをあわせ持ち、見る者に強烈な印象を残します。
代表作「海神（わたつみ）」シリーズでは、土の気質に寄り添いながら生まれた素朴で力強い質感が、海や雪などの自然の景物、さらには遠い記憶の情景をも想起させ、志野の新たな領域を切り開いてきました。
本展は、二年半ぶり二回目となる桃青での個展となります。圧倒的な存在感と緊張感を放つ「海神」の最新作をはじめ、そのエッセンスを伝統的な器形へと昇華させた作品、そして深みある釉調の志野茶盌の新作を一堂にご紹介いたします。
力強く斬新な造形美と繊細で詩的な表現が交錯する後藤秀樹の世界を、ぜひご高覧ください。
Ceramic artist Hideki Goto lives and works in Tajimi, Gifu Prefecture, one of Japan’s most important centers of ceramic production. His practice is rooted in the tradition of Shino ware, among the most celebrated forms of Japanese tea ceramics that emerged during the Momoyama period. While grounded in this historic lineage, he approaches Shino as a living language, continually expanding its expressive possibilities through his own distinctive sensibility.
Returning to the elemental process at the heart of Shino—feldspar applied to clay and entrusted to the transformative power of fire—he engages deeply with the material qualities of clay and the unpredictable dynamics of kiln firing. Through this dialogue with earth, glaze, and flame, he develops works in which form and surface evolve together.
His ceramics are distinguished by boldly undulating forms and richly varied Shino glaze surfaces. In his work, form generates shifts of color and texture, while the movement of glaze accentuates and animates the structure itself. The resulting presence is at once powerful and contemplative, balancing raw vitality with moments of quiet stillness.
A central body of work within his practice is the “Watatsumi (Sea Deity)” series, whose rugged surfaces and expansive forms evoke natural phenomena such as the sea or snow-covered landscapes, while also suggesting distant landscapes of memory. Through these works, he opens new terrain within the language of contemporary Shino ceramics.
This exhibition presents the artist’s latest works from the Watatsumi series alongside new Shino tea bowls and vessels, offering a compelling view of his continuing exploration of form, fire, and material.

裏山を見上げると太古の川の痕跡、その上手に６００万年前の堆積物、粘土層が広がります。
一輪車にスコップを積み込み、掘りだすのが制作の始まりとなります。
砂気の多い土 その下に長い時間をかけて鉄分が沈んだ土の層
そして、優秀な木節
フレッシュな土は陶芸にはあまり向きませんが、臨場感があります。
つなぎの粘りが少ない土を紙細工のように扱い機嫌を伺いながら形にしていきます。
土の声をちゃんと聞けていれば良いと思います。
