Tosei Kyoto Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by ceramic artist Kei Wakao, his first exhibition with the gallery in two years and five months, since May 2024.

Kei Wakao was born as the eldest son of Toshisada Wakao, a ceramic artist renowned as a leading master of Nezumi-Shino and designated by Gifu Prefecture as a Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property. Growing up surrounded by ceramics from an early age, Wakao was particularly exposed to Chinese ceramics, including celadon. After graduating from university, he began pursuing ceramics in earnest.

A pivotal moment came during a visit to the National Palace Museum in Taipei, where he was deeply captivated by the celadon he encountered. Since then, he has devoted many years to the study of glazes, continually experimenting and refining his techniques. With celadon at the heart of his practice, Wakao has developed a distinctive range of glaze expressions, including ivory-white and beige-toned glazes, and continues to explore new possibilities in his work today.

One of the defining qualities of Wakao’s work lies in the interplay between his richly nuanced glazes and the powerful forms that carry them. Techniques such as nerikomi and double crazing create intricate surfaces of remarkable depth, while his forms combine refinement with a sense of movement and vitality. The result is work that possesses both serenity and a compelling physical presence.

This exhibition will present a new body of work centered on tea bowls and flower vessels.

Bringing together Wakao’s decades-long exploration of glazes with his free and vigorous approach to form, these works reveal the current state of his artistic practice. We warmly invite you to experience the evolving expression of Kei Wakao on this occasion.
