桃青京都ギャラリーでは、静岡・伊豆高原を拠点に制作する陶芸家・鈴木秀昭の個展を開催いたします。
鈴木は一貫して「装飾」を制作の核に据え、九谷焼特有の色絵や金彩・銀彩を駆使しながら、器体を有機的に広がるキャンバスとして捉えた独自の作品世界を展開してきました。緻密に積み重ねられた文様は、曼荼羅のような奥行きと広がりを生み出し、小さな器や立体作品の中に豊穣な“小宇宙”を立ち上げています。自然界の秩序や神秘性への関心、そして「金には人を彼岸へ導く力がある」という作家自身の思想も、作品の重要な要素として息づいています。

Tosei Kyoto Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by ceramic artist Hideaki Suzuki, who is based in Izu Kogen, Shizuoka.
Suzuki has consistently centered his practice around the concept of “decoration,” creating richly layered works through intricate overglaze and underglaze painting, dimensional textures, and the fusion of both approaches. Using Kutani-style pigments, gold, and silver, he transforms ceramic surfaces into organic, expanding canvases filled with dense and immersive patterns.
His works evoke a mandala-like universe, where mystery, rhythm, and spirituality coexist within each vessel and sculptural form. Inspired by the hidden order found in nature—such as honeycombs and leaf veins—Suzuki creates unique microcosms that invite viewers into an extraordinary visual and emotional experience.
Blending the traditions of Kutani ware with experiences gained in the United States, Suzuki has developed a highly distinctive artistic language that has received recognition both in Japan and internationally.

【制作ステートメント】
私の制作にあたっての主眼は「装飾」で、上絵や下絵の技法で模様を描くもの、ひも作りによるテクスチャ一で立体的に模様を成すもの、そのニつを合わせるという三種の作品を軸に制作しています。異なる装飾方法によって作品が変貌し、存在感を增す可能性に着目しています。
粘土で作る形は、立体的で不規則なキャンバスであると捉えています。その表面に緻密な独自のデザインを施すことで、曼荼羅のような宇宙観へつながることを意図しています。
模様を描く作品には、九谷焼特有の色絵素材(上絵の具、赤、黑、金箔、銀箔、金液など) を使い、繰り返し焼成していくことで全体のデザインを完成させます。形の上に模様を描きながら、そこに広く深い小宇宙が現れるように、細かく複雑なデザインで覆っていきます。
ひも作りや上絵による装飾技法を用いることによって、自然物の持つ美しさと神秘、たとえばハチの巣や木の葉の葉脈に宿るように感じられる精神性を、作品の小宇宙に反映させたいという思いを持って制作しています。

Artist Statement
My primary focus in creating my work is “decoration.”
I work around three main approaches: painting patterns using overglaze and underglaze techniques, creating three-dimensional textures and motifs through coil-building, and combining these two methods together. Through these differing decorative approaches, I explore the potential for a work to transform and gain a stronger presence.
I regard forms made from clay as three-dimensional, irregular canvases. By applying intricate and original designs onto their surfaces, I aim to evoke a mandala-like sense of the universe.
For works featuring painted patterns, I use materials distinctive to Kutani ware—such as overglaze enamels, red and black pigments, gold leaf, silver leaf, and liquid gold—and complete the overall design through repeated firings. As I paint patterns over the form, I cover the surface with dense and complex designs so that a vast and profound microcosm may emerge within it.
By employing decorative techniques such as coil-building and overglaze painting, I seek to reflect within these miniature universes the beauty and mystery found in nature—such as the spirituality one senses in honeycombs or the veins of leaves.
