Kenji Kojima Ceramic Exhibition “New Sentiments” II

For this exhibition, I centered my work around a series of henko (flattened vessels). In the final stages of creation, as I stood before several pieces that had yet to be given mouth, I felt a strange sense—that by closing the mouth, a new kind of work might emerge...
Rather than using the traditional Iga clay, I sought out a new type of clay. I sealed the mouth and instead opened windows. I applied white slip reminiscent of Joseon dynasty ceramics and added subtle color accents before firing. As the forms took shape, they began to resemble houses, so I titled the series “SUMU”—a word that conveys the ideas of dwelling, inhabiting, and living.
The natural fissures that appeared in the coarse, unrefined clay during firing—what I call “smiling cracks”—imparted a certain nostalgic feeling to the pieces. This marks my first attempt at such an approach.
In addition to these works, I will also exhibit traditional Iga henko, tea bowls, and sake wares.

Note: “SUMU” encompasses the nuances of the Japanese words 住む, 棲む, and 栖む—all of which convey different aspects of living or dwelling.
