Tosei Kyoto Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by ceramic artist Atsushi Nakata, who is based in Mie Prefecture.

Born in Toyama Prefecture, Nakata studied at Osaka University of Arts before apprenticing under Iga-yaki ceramic artist Yasuto Imai. He established his own studio in 1996 and is currently based in Mie, where he continues to explore the possibilities of clay through his distinctive approach to form.

One of the defining characteristics of Nakata’s work is his combination of clay and urushi lacquer, which creates unique colors, textures, and a distinctive sense of depth. Although his works are ceramic, their soft luster can evoke the appearance of lacquerware, while their bold, sculptural forms give them a strong presence as objects in their own right. The way their appearance changes depending on the viewing angle, with light and shadow revealing different expressions, is another important quality of Nakata’s work.

Nakata’s recent practice centers on the concept of “Cut & Paste,” in which he cuts clay into pieces and recombines them to create new forms. By first deconstructing forms and meanings that once existed as a whole, he then reconstructs them by bringing together different elements, allowing unexpected forms to emerge through the process.

What began as “Cut & Paste” has gradually evolved into an approach that embraces the element of chance, expressed in his own words as “I cut and pasted, and this is what happened.” His process has now developed further into what he describes as “I cut, pasted, and pressed, and this is what emerged.” By incorporating the unexpected forms and textures that arise through the acts of cutting, pasting, and pressing, Nakata continues to explore new possibilities of form beyond the boundaries between vessel and object.

For this exhibition, we are pleased to present an extensive selection of new works created especially for the occasion, encompassing both the forms and techniques Nakata has developed throughout his practice and his latest explorations of “Cut & Paste.”
We invite you to experience the current work of Atsushi Nakata as he embraces the unexpected transformations that emerge through the creative process and continues to pursue new forms through a spirit of experimentation and freedom.

Artist Statement

I have been working in the “Cut & Paste” style up to the present. It involves taking apart the meaning that something originally had and reconstructing it into something different. Looking back, I think it may have been influenced by the “cut-up” writing style of the American writer William S. Burroughs, whose work I was deeply drawn to when I was a student.
Simply put, it means “cut and paste.” These days, I work with it in the sense of, “I cut and pasted, and this is what it became.” I have taken it a step further, and it has now become, “I cut, pasted, and pressed, and this is what came out.”
I am still feeling my way through the process, but I hope you will see these works as new works in their own right.
